Sinclair Knight Merz Pty. Ltd Selects Siemens to Support the Expansion of Leading International Mining Group

Siemens was selected by Sinclair Knight Merz Pty. Ltd, to support the expansion of leading international mining group, Rio Tinto, for its iron ore port facilities at Cape Lambert, in the Pilbara region of North Western Australia. The Cape Lambert Port B project is one of the larger resource projects undertaken in Australia in recent years. The project will expand the port's iron ore export capacity by an additional 123 million tons annually. It will provide a total of 18 GenIV Robicon Perfect Harmony drives, manufactured in New Kensington, Pa.; 18 H-Compact, 1400 kW, 6.6V, 6 pole motors from Siemens Electrical Drives Ltd, Tianjin, China; and eight Simotion control systems engineered in Australia for these two phases. These drive systems will be used on eight conveyors (inloading, outloading and wharf conveyors), that will transport iron ore from the stockyard to the shiploaders at the port. The project is executed in two phases. Site commissioning of three conveyors of the first phase is slated for completion in August this year. Deliveries for the five conveyors of the second phase are already in progress. The commissioning is planned for 2014.

Pemex Files Suit to Recover Nearly $160 Million from Siemens and SK Engineering & Construction in Global Bribery Case

Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and its affiliate Pemex-Refinacion (PREF) have filed a lawsuit in New York seeking to recover nearly $160 million from Siemens and SK Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd. (SKEC) in a global bribery case. According to the amended lawsuit, filed May 8, 2013 in U.S. District Court (case number 12 Civ. 9070 [LLS] ECF), Siemens and SKEC allegedly submitted an unrealistically low bid in 1996 to win a public contract for modernizing a Pemex refinery in Cadereyta, Mexico. In testimony given May 6, 2013, at Mexico's Solicitor General's Office, Peter Paul Muller, Siemens Mexico's former general counsel confirmed that Siemens paid bribes to PEMEX officials connected to the Cadereyta Project cost overruns. He added that there are other witnesses with knowledge of the facts related to the lawsuit.
